FAQs
Is the 30% Club supportive of quotas?
No. The 30% Club is philosophically opposed to mandatory quotas, believing that business-led, voluntary action is the only way to achieve meaningful change. Quotas are discriminatory and the example of Norway, where a quota changed the boardroom but actually led to a depletion of the female executive pipeline, demonstrates that they don’t work, if the goal is sustainable change at all levels.
I want to support the 30% Club. Can I join?
Given the nature of the campaign, membership of the 30% Club is only open to chairmen. There is no fee for joining. We welcome support at a number of levels. Please contact us at [email protected] if you would like to get involved.
Can my company become an affiliated organisation of the 30% Club?
Companies get involved either through their chairman’s support or through the Steering Committee and focus groups (see ‘How does the 30% Club work?’).
If your business is also involved in improving gender diversity, we welcome discussion and the opportunity to collaborate but we do not formally endorse diversity or other businesses. Affiliated organisations are either not-for-profit, cross-party parliamentary or other campaigning groups.
I am employed by a company that wants to progress its activities to improve diversity. Can you point me towards next steps?
Please refer to the section ‘What companies can do’.
I am a woman looking for a non-executive directorship. Can you help me?
Please refer to ‘What women can do’ and the ‘Executive search firms’ pages.
How does the 30% Club work? How is it funded?
The organisation and range of activities of the 30% Club has evolved over the period since launch in November 2010.
The members of the Club are chairmen, usually of FTSE 100, FTSE 250 or leading professional services firms. We also welcome the support of chairmen of EMEA regions of global firms. The chairmen lead by example and some are involved in speaking at events and media opportunities (this is entirely their individual choice).
The 30% Club is overseen by a Steering Committee, comprising senior women with a variety of professional backgrounds. Each member of the Committee is involved in a specific area of activity. The Steering Committee meets every six weeks to ensure the campaign adjusts to developments and to plan next stages.
There are currently five focus groups dealing with specific areas:
- Institutional Investor Group;
- Professional Services Pipeline Group
- Balancing the Pyramid (focused on corporates)
- Media and social media
- International Development
We are planning two further groups around the Public Sector and Sports/Culture.
Helena Morrissey chairs the 30% Club. Her assistant, Claudia Kohler, provides administrative support.
The 30% Club is a campaign group. Its activities have been made possible through the generosity of volunteers and organisations who have kindly hosted events. We are grateful to Newton, BNY Mellon, Rothschild, the London Stock Exchange, Bloomberg, KPMG, The Miles Partnership, Cass Business School, McKinsey, Linklaters, MHPC and to all the employing companies of the Steering Committee and focus group members for their support.
I’d like to set up a 30% Club in my own country. What should I do next?
Scarcity of women at senior levels is a global phenomenon. We are keen to support and encourage the establishment of 30% Clubs in other countries, within the context of basic philosophical parameters. We offer strategic advice and can help with the recruitment of local chairmen and other aspects. Please contact us at [email protected]
What will happen once the 30% Club reaches its goal?
This campaign has a clear agenda and a specific goal and we will cease the UK effort once that is reached, although specific activities may remain in place.
Would a 30% Club chairmen or Steering Committee member be willing to speak at my school/university/company/organisation?
Please contact us at [email protected] and we shall try to help.
